Heavy rains unleashed an incident of a landslide in Vaishno Devi Shrine today thereby claiming a life and injuring five others. The incident took place today morning at around 11:30 am between Himkoti and Ardhkuwari en route the cave shrine. As per the local police, one woman has died while five others have been severely wounded with one of them being critical. Though the details of the affected victims are yet to be ascertained, the details of the incident are also sketchy. Katra too recorded heavy rains of 47.9 mm in the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday. These heavy showers even resulted in the suspension of the Amarnath Yatra briefly on Friday which was resumed later in the day. Though, as the intensity of these showers is likely to reduce marginally, chances of major landslides will also reduce.
However, another incident of landslide was also witnessed on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway which has stopped pilgrims from the Jammu base camp from proceeding towards the Valley. Hence, people planning a trip to the famous Hindu Shrine this weekend are requested to wait for a few more days as this is not a very good time to tour the Northern hills. The reason for these intermittent showers over the state including the Vaishno Devi Shrine can be attributed to the successive Western Disturbances that have been affecting the Western Himalayan region.
