The Konkan and Goa region is one of the rainiest pockets of the country. In fact, it is the second-largest contributor to the countrywide rainfall amounts after the state of Karnataka. During the Monsoon season from June to September Karnataka receives an average rainfall of 3174 mm, while Konkan and Goa observe 2915 mm of rain.
But this Monsoon season Konkan and Goa seems to be on the verge of creating some record. According to the data available with Skymet, the region from June 1 to September 25 has received a mammoth 4298.3 mm of rain against the seasonal average of 2915 mm, which is 53% excess. There still are a few more days left before the month of September comes to an end. So with chances of rain during the remaining days, the rainfall figure may go higher.
Major contributors to this rainfall amount have been, Mumbai, Dahanu, Alibag, Harnai, Ratnagiri and Mahabaleshwar. In fact, all these places barring Harnai have created a record by surpassing the 10-year-old record of September rain.
If we look at the rainfall pattern in Konkan and Goa the average rainfall is very high, which makes the region the largest contributor to rainfall amounts in Maharashtra. Another characteristic of the Monsoon rain in Konkan and Goa is that failures are very few. In the last 15 years, there has been only one instance (2015) when rainfall in the region has been deficient. Here is a table explaining it.
