People of the city continues to bear the brunt of high day temperatures along with high levels humidity. For last several days, the city of joy has been recording above normal day temperature of 35.4°C by at least 3-4 degrees.
On Monday, Kolkata recorded day temperature of 36.6°C that was two degrees above normal. It has already recorded highest day maximum in last 10 years on April 12 at 41.3°C.
Nights are also uncomfortable, with minimums temperatures in high 20s. Today, Kolkata recorded minimum temperature of 29°C, that was also four degrees above normal.
This hot and sultry weather is likely to persist over the city for the next couple of days. According to Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation has been prevailing over Bangladesh and adjoining Meghalaya and Assam. With this, the moist southwesterly wind flow has intensified along the coastal region including Kolkata.
Though it has dropped day temperatures marginally by one or two degrees but humidity levels have increased significantly. This has further added to the discomfort levels, especially during the afternoon hours.
At present, humidity levels in Kolkata are already reaching up to 90% in morning. While, it reduces in afternoon but still remains high at 50%.
No major relief is likely in coming days as pre-Monsoon showers will continue to be far and few.
April is likely to end on a dry note and we can only expect some relief in May only. So far, the city has recorded mere 0.2 mm of rain against the monthly average of 58.8 mm.
Weather models indicate that rains are only expected to make a comeback by first week of May.
