The entire state of West Bengal including Kolkata have been receiving good rain and thundershower activities for the last couple of days. A cyclonic circulation that was initially persisting over South Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal forced rains into the region.
During the last 24 hours, from 8:30 am on Tuesday Kolkata received heavy showers of 23.4 mm, which was accompanied with hailstorm activity and violent Kal Baisakhi in most parts of the city. In fact, during evening hours, the wind speed exceeded 50 kmph. Rest parts of West Bengal also received widespread weather activities.
Multiple weather systems were responsible for these widespread weather activities. A trough was extending from North Bihar up to the northeastern states across West Bengal. Accompanied with this system was the remnants of the Western Disturbance over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim region. And the anti-cyclone which was persisting over North Bay of Bengal was pushing moisture to the region of Northeast India.
Initially, the weather activity affected Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, which gradually shifted southwards giving scattered rain in several other districts of Gangetic West Bengal. By evening Kolkata also started witnessing rains.

Now these weather systems have weakened. The persisting anti-cyclone in North Bay of Bengal has shifted to the southern parts of Bay of Bengal. Therefore, the moisture incursion will now reduce in the northeastern region.
However, scattered rain and thundershower activities with reduced intensity will continue over many parts of West Bengal including Kolkata till April 12.
