The successive Western Disturbances have not only been causing intense rain and snow over the hills of North India long with some good showers over Kolkata, but these weather systems have also been successful in lowering the temperatures over Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata.
This year the frequency and intensity of Western Disturbances were much higher than the previous year. Moreover, whenever Western Disturbances travel along the foothills of the Himalayas, towards eastern parts of the country, they trigger rain over Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
This time, northwesterly winds continued to blow even up till eastern parts of the country due to which temperatures remained under check, being on the lower side only. Whenever a Western Disturbance induces a Cyclonic Circulation induces a Cyclonic Circulation over the Northern Plains, it moves in an eastern direction along with the Western Disturbance in the upper latitudes.
Thus, a trough extends from North India up to Bihar, and sometimes even up to Gangetic West Bengal leading to scattered rain and thundershowers over eastern regions.
This time Gangetic West Bengal along with Kolkata have received scattered rains throughout the season due to these Western Disturbances. Thus, temperatures in Kolkata have remained below the normal levels. In fact, yesterday, the city recorded its maximum at 30 degrees, which is two notches below normal.
As per Mahesh Palawat, Vice President of Meteorology and Climate Change at Skymet Weather, now also, Western Disturbances will continue to affect the Western Himalayan region due to which Kolkata will continue to observe temperatures on the lower side only.
