Rains have finally picked up pace over the city of Kolkata in the third week of August. During the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Thursday, the Alipore Observatory of Kolkata recorded 40 mm of rains.
At present, a Cyclonic Circulation has formed over North Bay of Bengal and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha coast. This system may intensify into a Low-Pressure Area by tomorrow.
Therefore, we expect moderate spells of rain to lash Gangetic West Bengal and the capital city Kolkata until tomorrow.
We expect isolated thundershower activities on August 25 as well, reducing thereafter. However, due to high humidity localized weather activities cannot be ruled out.
Moderate to heavy showers lashed the city between August 13 and 18. Kolkata received its heaviest downpour on August 16. This is when a total of 138 mm rain lashed the city which led to waterlogging and local flooding in many parts of the city. After August 18, rains were mainly subdued over Kolkata.
Kolkata receives average rain of 344.5 mm in August. Until now, 475 mm rains have already been recorded in Kolkata. So, the monthly average has been surpassed already. As, more rains are on the cards for the city, the surplus amount could rise further.
