On and off rain has been witnessed by the residents of Kolkata but it seems like that the usual heavy to very heavy rainfall of June evaded the City of Joy. The main reason for the absence of any heavy spell of rainfall is the lack of any significant weather system across Bay of Bengal.
For the month of June, the rainfall figures for Kolkata stand at 131.7 mm. This figure is less than 50% of the normal rainfall for June. At 283.5 mm of usual rainfall for Kolkata in June, the city remained miserably rainless this month.
Even now also Skymet Weather does not expect any major weather system to form over Gangetic West Bengal that will give heavy rain over Kolkata. But rain intensity is expected to increase over Gangetic West Bengal and Kolkata by July 3.
During the last few days of June, East India saw a drop in rainfall due to the formation of a low-pressure area in Bay of Bengal. This system cut off the moisture content in the region making rainfall a rarity even in Monsoon.
But the good news is that rainfall activity may pick up pace from July 6 onwards. Around that time few good showers may occur over the City of Joy. As of now July seems to be much better month in term of rainfall in comparison to June. The monthly average of July is higher than June, it stands at 399.9 mm. And it is expected that rain in July over Kolkata will be at par.
