Rains have finally made a comeback over Kolkata and that too with a bang. Extremely heavy rain lashed the capital city of West Bengal, with Dum Dum Observatory recording 96 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday.
Alipore Observatory also received 83 mm of rain, which is the highest rainfall on record during February. Prior to this, the all-time high rainfall record was at 80.8 mm of rain on February 18, 1906.
Besides this, Kolkata has also surpassed the monthly average rainfall of 30.7 mm by 186% as the city has received 86 m of rain so far (measured at Alipore Observatory). Few parts of the city also witnessed hailstorm accompanied with squally winds.
According to Skymet Weather, the activity can be attributed to the presence of an east-west trough that is extending from Assam up to Chhattisgarh across Gangetic West Bengal. In wake of the weather activity, maximum temperature has witnessed a drop but minimum temperature has increased marginally.
As we move further, a cyclonic circulation has developed over Bangladesh and Gangetic west Bengal. Under its influence, scattered rains will continue for another 24 hours over Kolkata but a similar heavy spell is not likely.
Kolkata has been mainly dry for most of the month. Till Monday, city had only recorded 3 mm of rain that too on February 9.
