Heavy rains and thundershowers have lashed Kolkata as the city recorded 42 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday. With this, the city has also surpassed its monthly average rainfall of 30.7 mm of rain in a day only.

At present also, the city of joy is recording good rains. Light to moderate rains have been observed over the state capital since 8 am on Friday. The sky conditions remain overcast and Kolkata is likely to record rains of varying intensity throughout the day with short intervals.

According to Skymet Weather, the ongoing rains can be attributed to the depression in west-central Bay of Bengal. It is presently lying about 300 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 550 km south-southwest of Paradip (Odisha) and 900 km southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).

The system will continue to track northwards along the east coast of India. Currently, the intensity of rains is more over Odisha coast but as the system moves further north, rain activity is also likely to increase over Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata.

Weathermen predict moderate to heavy showers are expected to lash Kolkata during the weekend. Wind speed will also pick up pace during the next 24 hours and moderate winds will blow over the entire city.

Thereafter, the system will move in northeast direction towards Bangladesh and thus, rains will reduce over the city after November 6. However, scattered rains will continue over Kolkata along with several other parts of Gangetic West Bengal.
