Kolkata has finally recorded its first heavy spell of Monsoon rains in the season. In the span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Dum Dum Observatory of the city recorded 87 mm of rain which has been highest so far.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, cyclonic circulation over Bihar and adjoining West Bengal has been giving good weather over the region including Kolkata. However, rainfall was patchy in nature as other areas in the city have recorded showers with varying intensity.
As per the latest forecast by Skymet, Monsoon will remain on the lower side for next two days but is expected to revive again by July 5. An insitu weather system, which is predominantly on land, can be seen developing over West Bengal and adjoining Bay of Bengal region that will start giving moderate to heavy rain over Kolkata from next week onward.
As July begins, heavy rains will keep lashing the city quite often as most of the weather systems are formed in Bay of Bengal. Its close proximity to the city, makes it prone to heavy showers.
Rains over the city have been subdued ever since the onset of the Southwest Monsoon over the region. In June, Kolkata has recorded 241 mm of rain against the monthly normal of 284 mm.
Normally, Monsoon covers Kolkata by June 5 but this year, progress of eastern arm of the Southwest Monsoon has remained sluggish. Due to which, the onset of Monsoon over Kolkata was fairly delayed till the third week of June.
