Kolkata has been one city which has received Monsoon rains on a continuous basis. So much so that the City of Joy has recorded a few good spells of rain during the month of August. All thanks to the back to back weather systems developing in the Bay of Bengal.
While the previous Monsoon system moved inland and is currently lying over Rajasthan as a low pressure area, a fresh system developed in the Bay about two days ago. The weather system had formed in the Northeast Bay of Bengal as a cyclonic circulation.
Currently, the system has intensified into a low pressure area and is lying over Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal. Due to this weather system, heavy Monsoon showers have been recorded over the capital city of West Bengal.
During the last 21 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Kolkata recorded a whopping 59 mm of rain. More rains are likely over Kolkata in the coming days as the weather system is likely to intensify into a well-marked low during the next 24 hours.
So far, Kolkata has recorded a good 486 mm of rainfall against its monthly average of 352.4 mm. Just a few days ago, it didn’t seem like Kolkata would easily be able to surpass its monthly mean. With more rains in the offing, the City of Joy may break a few monthly rain records.
