Monsoon rains over Kolkata have revived and good showers have occurred over the City of Joy during the last 24 hours. The city has been receiving light rain for the past few days. However, good rainfall activity has been witnessed over Kolkata after about a week.
During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Dum Dum observatory in Kolkata recorded a whopping 40 mm of rain. So far, Dum Dum observatory has recorded 184.1 mm of rainfall during the month of June.
These rains can be attributed to the trough which is extending from North Rajasthan to Manipur across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal.
Monsoon rains yesterday were patchy in nature as only scattered light rain was recorded over the Alipore observatory. During the last 24 hours, Alipore recorded a mere 0.4 mm of rain. The last time good rains were recorded over the location was on June 12. Thereafter, the region has been witnessing only light rains.
Now, a cyclonic circulation has formed in the Bay of Bengal off Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu coast. Also, this system is expected to move inland soon. While Monsoon will become active over Interior Peninsula, rains will reduce in intensity over Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata. However, on and off light rain will continue over Kolkata.
