May began on a rainy note for Kolkata, with the city of joy recording light rain and thundershowers on the first two days of the month itself. Thereafter, rains took a back seat and the city has been dry since then.
Now, Kolkata is all set to witness another spell of pre-Monsoon activities and we can expect good spell of spell of rain and thundershowers on May 8-9. But as reiterated earlier also, these pre-Monsoon activities will take place during the latter parts of the day or early morning hours.
According to Skymet Weather, a trough is likely to form from West Uttar Pradesh up to Gangetic West Bengal. Due to this, moist winds from Bay of Bengal will start reaching over West Bengal including Kolkata.
These weather systems will then lead to development of convective clouds over the entire region, bringing rains over several parts of the region by early next week.
As we proceed further in the month, pre-Monsoon rain and thundershowers in terms of thundershowers, thunderstorm, thunders quall will also increase. This also the favourable period for hailstorm.
Till May 5, Kolkata has recorded 4.3 mm of rain. However, there is a daunting target in front of the state capital as the monthly average rainfall for May stands at 133 mm.
“Weather models are suggesting that Kolkata will manage to reach near its normal rainfall. But, whether it will surpass the given figure, we will have to wait for that. These pre-Monsoon showers are intense and sharp in nature and thus, such two-three spells of rains cannot be ruled out over the city,” said Mahesh Palawat, Chief Meteorologist, Skymet Weather.
