Pre-Monsoon showers have finally made an appearance over Kolkata, bringing in massive relief from scorching heat. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, the city has recorded 4.6 mm of rain.
According to Skymet Weather, light rains and thundershowers were witnessed over many places and few places have recorded good showers but for short duration. Few places of the city have also witnessed hailstorm.
In wake of this, maximum temperature have also registered a good drop and are now settling near normal. On Tuesday, mercury had come down to 36.3°C from 40.1°C in last 48 hours.
The weather activity is due to a cyclonic circulation marked over Bihar and adjoining West Bengal. A trough is also extending from this system up to Odisha across Gangetic West Bengal.
With this, steady flow of humid southerly winds from Bay of Bengal will continue to feed moisture over most parts of West Bengal including Kolkata.
Thus, we expect moderate to good rain and thundershowers to continue for another 48 hours. Isolated chances of thunderstorm and hailstorm are also expected.
These ongoing rains will be patchy in nature, thus day temperatures will fall but weather will continue to be warm and sultry. But evenings and nights will be far more pleasant.
Kolkata has not witnessed any rains since April 8, leading to significant rise in maximum temperatures. On several occasions, day temperatures were above normal average by 4-6 degrees amounting to heatwave conditions.
The good news is that on and off pre-Monsoon rain and thundershowers will continue over the city now onwards with a gap of 2-3 days.
