Kolkata facing rainfall deficit

It is not only the national capital Delhi that is bearing the brunt of hot and humid conditions, but another metropolitan city- Kolkata is witnessing similar weather with deficit rainfall so far.

The city of joy has experienced just 159mm of rain between June 1 and July 16 — the second lowest in a decade, in this period. In 2009, the city recorded just 158mm rainfall during the same period. As per records the city has only received 37mm rainfall between July 1 and 15.

According to experts the weather pattern is to blame for the scanty rain and heat in the city.

In the monsoon season a low pressure forms over headway (North Bay of Bengal) and intensifies and crosses the coastal belt of gangetic West Bengal and further moves towards northwest. Normally during this season 4-6 well marked low pressure areas form over headway giving good rainfall at gangetic West Bengal and the adjacent states.

But for last few consecutive years the low pressure area is forming over north west bay of coastal Orissa and quickly moving in an easterly direction resulting in central India getting more rain and causing deficit rain over gangetic plains i.e West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar. This year also it is forming in the same manner hence lesser rain yet.
