Kolkata and West Bengal gear up for more rain and thundershower today

May 25, 2019 9:38 AM | Skymet Weather Team

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal has been receiving moderate to heavy rains since last many days, while Gangetic West Bengal has been running dry until now. Only some, on and off scattered rains were witnessed over the region. Kolkata and its adjoining areas have also remained dry.

However, now the situation is going to change as a Cyclonic Circulation is over Bangladesh and its adjoining areas. And humid winds from the Bay of Bengal are feeding moisture to the region. These weather systems will act in tandem to give rain in the entire state of West Bengal. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal will continue to receive rains for at least the next one week.

Rains in Gangetic West Bengal

The conditions are turning favorable for the intensity of rain to increase over Gangetic West Bengal as well. We expect many districts in the region to receive light to moderate rain and thundershower with one or two heavy spells, on May 25 and 26. Strong winds and lightning strikes are also possible as this is the time of the pre-Monsoon season when Kal Baisakhi and Nor’westers are very common in the region. Winds with a velocity of 50-60 kmph gusting to 80 kmph could be observed in Gangetic West Bengal. Today we expect rain at many places in Gangetic West Bengal. By tomorrow the intensity of rain will weaken but  scattered rains will continue. This is may be the first good spell of rain in Gangetic West Bengal during the month of May.

Rain in Kolkata

Kolkata may also receive one or two short spells of intense rain and thundershower activities with strong winds today. Kolkata in West Bengal is one of the rainiest cities in India and observes very good amounts of rain during the pre-Monsoon and Monsoon seasons. This season however, the rains for the city of Kolkata have been slightly on the lower side.
