Rain in Kochi has shattered all rainfall records this Monsoon season, with city receiving highest rainfall ever in August. Kochi has recorded 820 mm of rain till now, surpassing the all-time high rainfall record that stood at 783.5 mm in August 2014.
This is almost twice of monthly average rainfall of 379 mm that too during the first half of August itself. With Monsoon being vigorous, we expect Kochi rains to set new record in the coming days.
The southern city has been recording some incessant rains this month. There has been four spell of 3-digit rainfall so far. The latest was recorded during the last 24 hours wherein city has recorded extremely heavy rains to the tune of 105 mm only from 8:30 am on Tuesday.
In fact, heavy rains are likely to continue over the city for another 24 hours. This would be on account of active off-shore trough running the West Coast, particularly over Kerala. This may lead to flooding in some areas as well.
However, rains would reduce marginally but moderate rains and thundershowers with few intense spells to continue over North and Central Kerala including Kochi till August 17. Thereafter, rains would reduce as an anti-cyclone is likely to come up in Southeast Arabian Sea. Due to this, winds would change from westerly to northwesterly that would not be conducive of Monsoon rains.
Hence, weathermen are predicting light rains for at least a week thereon, until fresh Monsoon surge effects Kerala.
