Kochi, Madekeri, Kozhikode, Mangalore to settle with light rains

August 21, 2017 11:32 AM | Skymet Weather Team

During the last 24 hours, moderate rains at many places with heavy at isolated places were observed over the state of Kerala. Thus, places such as Alappuzha, Kannur, Kochi, Kottayam and Kozhikode recorded a good amount of rainfall activity. Hence, comfortable and pleasant weather conditions have been prevailing over Kerala in the last couple of days. Also, in last two days, moderate rains with isolated heavy at a few places have been occurring over Coastal Karnataka region as well.

In a span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Madikeri recorded 56 mm of rainfall, Mangalore 43 mm, Kannur 35 mm, Alapuzzha 30 mm, Kozhikode, Honavar 26 mm, Thrissur and Punalur 24 mm, Karipur 18 mm, Kottayam 13 mm, Kochi 11 mm and Thiruvananthapuram and Karwar 8 mm.

These weather conditions can be attributed to an active offshore trough which is seen running from South Gujarat up to Kerala. Also, a low pressure area is seen persisting over Konkan & Goa region and adjoining areas of North Madhya Maharashtra.

Due to the combined effect of these weather systems, light rains with moderate spells at isolated places are expected to continue over entire West Coast including Kerala and Coastal Karnataka during the next 24 to 48 hours. Moreover, places such as Madikeri, Mangalore, Kochi, Kozhikode and Kannur will continue to receive good Monsoon showers.

Now, this low pressure area which is seen prevailing over the region is likely to weaken gradually and move in a westerly direction. Also, this will further lead to the weakening of the offshore trough. Therefore, the rainfall intensity is likely to reduce significantly over most parts of Kerala and Coastal Karnataka during the next few days.
