Western Disturbance over Jammu & Kashmir

The Western Disturbance (WD) over Jammu & Kashmir is bringing snow in the higher reaches and rain in the plains of the Western Himalayan region. The WD reached Jammu & Kashmir from north Pakistan last night and will move eastward during the next 48 hours.

Western Disturbance is a low pressure area that emerges in the Mediterranean Sea and adjoining Atlantic Ocean and moves in east-northeast direction to reach the Western Himalayan region in a span of three to four days.

As we are entering into the month of March, these mid latitude weather systems would track more towards the higher latitudes and their affect will not be felt as much as we were experiencing during peak winter months.

Cyclonic circulation over northwest plains

Parts of Punjab, Haryana, East Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh are witnessing rain due to a cyclonic circulation which is persisting over south Haryana for last 24 hours. This weather system is working in accordance with the Western Disturbance in Jammu & Kashmir. The weather system had emerged in west Rajasthan two days ago. It will move more eastward now from its present location.

Western Disturbance over sub-Himalayan West Bengal

This is basically the remnants of the Western Disturbance that passed the Western Himalayan region two days ago and now lies over sub-Himalayan West Bengal. This weather system is working in tandem with the cyclonic circulation in East India. While moving eastward, it will bring rain in the northeastern states in the coming two days.

Cyclonic circulation over East India

The cyclonic circulation that emerged off Saurashtra coast in the Arabian Sea two days ago is now positioned in east central and adjoining areas of East India. After bringing rain in Gujarat and west Madhya Pradesh, the weather system will continue to bring rain over east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Sikkim during the next 24 hours. This weather system is being supported by another Western Disturbance that lies over the hills of Himalayas in East India.

Anti-cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal

This weather system in the Sea is responsible for bringing moisture in east central and East India through southeasterly winds. These moist winds are colliding with warmer winds blowing from the west direction to keep the weather cloudy and rainy in these parts.
