Moderate to heavy rains are expected to lash several parts of Kerala during next 24 hours. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the coastal state has already been receiving good showers for last couple of days and this weather activity is likely to continue for a couple of days more.
The well-marked low pressure area over east-central Bay of Bengal was responsible for the rain on Thursday. While, the weather system intensified into a depression on Friday morning and is presently centered at 14°N and 70.3°E.
The system is expected to strengthen further into a deep depression during next 24 hours, which will trigger heavy rains over Kerala for next 24 to 48 hours.
A trough is also extending from southeast Arabian Sea off Coastal Karnataka and Kerala, which will also enhance the weather activity in the region.
Let us have a look at the rainfall figures recorded in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday.
Although Southwest Monsoon has retreated from most parts of Northwest and Central India, Kerala is still under its influence. Southwest Monsoon generally withdraws from the state by October 10. Thereafter, it enters into a transition period from Southwest Monsoon to Northeast Monsoon.
As a result, Kerala receives highest amount of rainfall in Peninsular India in October. The state records 481 mm of rain followed by 438 mm in Tamil Nadu.
