Widespread protests by farmers have been seen in the recent days across many states in the country. And the Left government in Kerala is all geared up to latch onto this opportunity by announcing the purchase of agricultural produce like onions and potatoes directly from the farmers of North India at MSP (Minimum Support Price).
Speaking to media house NDTV, finance minister of Kerala Thomas Isaac said that the modalities are being worked out after farmers from the Kisan Long March in Maharashtra approached the state government for help. It is to be noted that Kerala produces only 20-25% of food produce and the demand of onion is always high in the state.
Adding further, the finance minister said that onions have never sold below ₹ 15 per kg in the state but by getting them from North India it will pull down the price in the local market and in return help the farmers of North India to get the right value of their produce. He also said that the Centre and all state governments must take up the responsibility of supporting the farmers and ending their miseries.
The Central government in 2019 budget has assured small and marginal farmers of a direct income support of Rs. 6000 per annum, to be transferred directly to farmers in three installments.
