Almost the entire month of January remained dry for southern peninsular India. Thus, Kerala too observed dry weather conditions and proved to be a rain deficient month for the state. In January the state recorded mere 2mm of rain against its average of 8.7mm, leading to large rain deficiency of 76%.

Light showers occurred during the fag end of the month. However, even these rains were not widespread and remained confined to the southern coastal stations of the state.
In fact, the month of January is clearly the driest month for Kerala therefore we can say that good rains seldom occur over the state. This usually happens whenever a cyclonic circulation, low pressure area or trough develop over the southeast Arabian Sea off Kerala Coast.
As per Skymet Weather, light to moderate rains have occurred over many parts of Kerala during the last 24 hours. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Thiruvananthapuram recorded 18mm and Punalur recorded 3.4mm.
These rains occurred due to a cyclonic circulation which is seen over Sri Lanka and adjoining areas. A trough is also seen running from the Southeast Arabian Sea to Karnataka Coast.
Due to the influence of these weather systems, we expect light to moderate rains over many parts of Kerala for at least next two days till February 10.
Thereafter, the weather systems will become less marked and the rain intensity will decrease significantly. Thus, the weather will gradually become dry.
In addition to this, day temperatures are expected to drop by 2-3°C due to cloudy skies and rain activities. However, around February 9 temperatures will again start increasing and days will become warm and sunny.
