Updated on August 25: Relief from heavy rains in Kerala, light spells to continue

Rains over Kerala have reduced drastically which was predicted by Skymet Weather. In fact, most parts of the state remained mainly dry. This brought a huge sense of relief from the flooding rains that had paralyzed the state a couple of days back.

As of now also, we do not expect any significant rain activity over the state for the least one week. The rain activity is likely to remain light, however, due to the presence of moisture content, isolated light rains with one or two moderate spells may keep occurring over the state.  Moreover, the speed of the westerly winds has also reduced which has brought a huge relief. Thus, we do not expect any significant increase in the rain activity for the least one week.

Updated on August 24: Kerala rains reduce, state focus on rehabilitation

After reeling under torrential, flooding rains for the last many days, the rains have now reduced drastically. However, the state has continued to experience light spells. In fact, rains began to reduce since the last day only.

In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Thursday, Kozhikode recorded 2.3 mm of rains, while Cannur witnessed some traces of rains. Along with these light spells, now, the sunshine hours have increased and for the last two days, most parts of the state have been experiencing bright sunny skies or partly cloudy skies.

Kerala has been facing the worst flood in the last hundred years with 13 out of the 14 districts being submerged due to incessant rains. The state has mostly recorded rainfall in 100 digits for the last couple of days that led to the flooding situation.

In addition to this, water was also released from 80 dams which overflowed and deteriorated the flooded situation. Lakhs of people have taken shelter under the relief camps across the state after flood water entered their houses.

As per Skymet Weather, the offshore trough which was responsible for such torrential showers has become less marked. Moreover, at present, there is no other significant weather system seen affecting the state.

Thus, we do not expect any increase in the rain activity for the least one week. The weather is likely to start clearing more, however, being a coastal state, few spells of light rains due to the presence of moisture may continue. In addition to this, the speed of the westerly winds has also reduced.

Hence in a nutshell, with the reduction in the rains, the relief operations can be carried on with lesser trouble. Moreover, now the state is all set to focus on rehabilitation.
