Kerala rains reduce, to resume by weekend as Monsoon 2018 nears

May 23, 2018 4:26 PM | Skymet Weather Team

As predicted by Skymet Weather, pre-Monsoon rains became subdued over Kerala with most of the stations witnessing dry weather conditions and only a few pockets receiving some showers.

The reason for the reduction in the pre-Monsoon activities over Kerala can be associated with the Cycone Mekunu in the Arabian Sea that has been taking away moisture.

The month of May has been a rain surplus month so far and that too by a big margin for the state. However, back to back cyclonic storms kept influencing the wind pattern, thereby reducing the rains which became patchy.

The first two weeks of May for Kerala ended on a surplus note, with the first week recording a whopping 89% of surplus rains and the second week ending with a 49% rainfall surplus note. However, this week saw the leanest period for the state with rainfall witnessing a reducing trend and becoming patchy in nature. This lean week for Kerala pull down the surplus, but it still remained on the excess side.

In the last 24 hours also, rains continued across Kerala but with reduced intensity. The extent of reduction in the rainfall activities can be made out of the fact that out of the 11 stations whose rainfall is recorded as a pre-requisite for the onset of Southwest Monsoon, only two stations managed to record some light spells. Meanwhile, most of the other stations remained mainly dry.

In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Thiruvananthapuram recorded 5.9 mm of rains and Kollam witnessed some traces of rains.

As of now, mainly the second half of the upcoming week is anticipated to bring in some extremely good rains for Kerala i.e. after the passage of the system. However, the pace of the rains would start witnessing a rising trend this weekend onwards that would, in turn, set the tone for the onset of Southwest Monsoon which will make a timely arrival this year.

Kerala is the third largest rain contributing state during the Southwest Monsoon season in India. The first and second position is bagged by Coastal Karnataka and Konkan region respectively.

The normal onset date for Southwest Monsoon over Kerala is June 1 however, this year Monsoon is expected to make an early arrival.
