Massive landslides have struck Kerala’s Wayanad district amidst very heavy rains over many parts of the state. The major landslide occurred near the Meppadi hilly area, under the high-altitude rural district of Wayanad. There have been quite a few casualties and many are still feared trapped under the debris. Rescue operations are underway but getting hindered by non-stop rains in the area. Wayanad, Kannur, and Kozhikode have all raining since yesterday. Indian Air Force has been called in for rescue operations. Very low clouds and intense rains are restricting the relief operations.

Seasonal offshore troughs from South Gujarat to Kerala have been active.  Strong and powerful activity has been lashing Coastal Karnataka and Kerala. The state of Kerala received very heavy rains on Sunday, more so in the northern half comprising Wayanad, Kannur, Kudlu, Kasargod, Kanhangad, Payyannur, Thalaserry and Kozhikode. Moderate spread of showers with isolated heavy rainfall struck Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Guruvayur and Thrissur, as well. Extreme southern parts, including Kottayam, Alappuzha, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram also witnessed similar activity. Heavy and incessant rains have led to landslides in the prone hilly areas.

Weather activity will continue for the next about 72 hours. The northern half of the state including Wayanad, Kannur and Kudlu will be vulnerable to inclement weather conditions. The southern half will be far better than the risky north. Weather activity will further intensify, tomorrow and the day after over the northern districts, including Wayanad. Rough weather with stormy conditions will surely impede the relief and rescue operations. The hanging low clouds, accompanied by rains and poor visibility will restrict the flying operations in that difficult terrain.
