Updated on June 16, 10:20 am - Kerala rains have now eased out and taken a break as during the last 24 hours also, light to moderate rains occurred over parts of Kerala.
In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Kottayam recorded 18.4 mm of rain, followed by Punalur 4.6 mm, Alapuzzha 0.8 mm, Kannur 0.3 mm, Thiruvananthapuram 0.2 mm.
Updated on June 15, 4:14 pm - The state of Kerala has been battered by heavy rainfall activity which resulted in flash floods as well as landslides in the state. In fact, five people which includes three children lost their lives in the region of Kozhikode. Schools also remained closed in several districts including Kozhikode, Kottayam, Alappuzha and Wayanad.
In the last two to three days, three digit rains have been lashing the state of Kerala on a daily basis. In fact, between June 7 and 13, Kerala saw surplus rains of 83 percent which means the state saw 352.4 mm against 252.6 mm.

In fact, until June 13, the seasonal rainfall for Kerala stands surplus by 40 percent. All districts have witnessed surplus rains except Alappuzha. The last 24 hours also saw excess rains for many parts.
In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Irikkur in Kannur saw 164 mm of rains, Vythri and Mananthavady in Wayanad recorded 152 mm and 109.2 mm rains, respectively. Heavy rains were also witnessed in Palakkad district including the cities of Ottapalam (158.8 mm), Parambikulam (120 mm), Mannarkad (120 mm), and Pattambi (103.8 mm).
Nilambur (206.4 mm), Manjeri 230 mm, Perinthalmanna 116.8 mm, and Karipur 201.4 mm in Malappuram saw heavy rains. Hefty rainfall was also recorded in Vadakkancherry (126 mm), and Vellanikkara 128 mm in Thrissur.
During the Southwest Monsoons season, the entire West Coast is one of the rainiest pockets. The off-shore trough along the West Coast, which is a semi-permanent feature is responsible for giving rains over these areas.
When active Monsoon conditions persist, the entire stretch sees moderate to heavy Monsoon rains. However, rains take a backseat over Konkan and Goa during weak Monsoon conditions. It is the Coastal Karnataka and Kerala region which see some rains during this period.
Now, rains are expected to take a break between June 15 and 17, and will only revive around June 18. Due to this, flood situation will ease out to quite an extent over the state of Kerala.
