Kerala floods: Situation to remain grim in Kerala for at least next three days, heavy showers in Kochi

Vigorous Monsoon rains continued to batter the state of Kerala during the last 24 hours. Due to relentless rains, flood fury is still continuing in many parts, with Kochi and Kozhikode observing more than 100 mm of rains.

In the last 24 hours, from 8:30 am on Saturday, Kozhikode has recorded 113.7 mm of rain, followed by Kochi 101 mm, Alapuzha 92.8 mm, Kannur 48.9 mm, Punalur 43.8 mm and Thiruvananthapuram 13.8 mm of rainfall.

These activities are a result of the offshore Trough which is extending from the South Gujarat Coast up to the Lakshadweep area. As the system will persist for some more time, a similar weather condition is likely for the next three to four days.

Places like Kozhikode, Kannur, Kochi, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Karimpur would observe no relief from flood situation as heavy rains will continue to lash these places for the next 48 hours to 72 hours. Moreover, landslides in isolated places cannot be ruled out here.

Meanwhile, Kottayam, Kulalur, Thiruvananthapuram will observe moderate showers and the situation would remain comparatively better here.

Due to incessant rains, the death toll climbed up to 57 on August 10 in the state of Kerala. Over 1.65 lakh people have lost their homes. Rescue operations have been continuously going on, with 1318 flood relief camps, supporting 1,65,519 people from 46,400 families. Over 190 houses are fully damaged, whereas 2303 have faced partial damage.

In just three days, nearly 80 landslides have taken place, taking lives of many, wherein 19 deaths have been reported from Malappuram district, 14 from Kozhikode, while 10 people have lost their lives in Wayanad.
