Kerala Floods

Published on August 20, 2018: Kerala has seen some respite on Monday but a mammoth task of rehabilitating the homeless and preventing outbreak of water-borne diseases lies ahead. So far, the death toll has mounted to 216. Flood material is being sent from all across the country and even other parts of the world while donations for Kerala floods remain in full swing.

Health authorities have prepared Defence forces against the spread of disease in the state due to the prolonged floods.

The biggest challenges are cleaning of the flood-hit houses, prevention of water-borne diseases and most importantly rehabilitation. The WHO has also sent a 13-member team to Kerala to oversee efforts to counter an outbreak.

Now, rains will remain on the backseat which will help in the rehabilitation process at a faster pace.

Published on August 19, 2018: The state of Kerala continues to battle with flood conditions even after rains do reduce to some extent. Rainfall activity has eased out to an extent, but the state continues to battle with floods and thousands remain stranded.

In fact, more than 3.5 lakh people are even now in over 3,000 relief camps across the state of Kerala after the rains throttled God’s Own Country. In the past ten days, the death toll has crossed 200 and since Southwest Monsoon hit the state, Kerala saw more than 300 deaths.

The Defence Forces have contributed enough and until now have saved 23,213 lives, provided medical aid to more than 2000 people, restored connectivity at 42 locations, cleared 22 landslides and built 15 temporary bridges.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, rainfall intensity will reduce as compared to previous days. Hence, rains will be moderate in nature for the next few days due to this trough.

As rainfall intensity will reduce, there may be slight relief from flood conditions. However, due to the water still inundating many areas, the situation will take time to improve.

Red alert has also been withdrawn from all the areas due to rains reducing over these areas.
