Kerala floods: Another round of rain to hit Kerala tomorrow onward as death toll rises to 60

After experiencing devastating downpour, the intensity of rain has reduced in the state of Kerala. During the last 24 hours, only moderate spells with one or two heavy spells were recorded in the state. And we do not expect much rainfall activities today as well.

With rains easing out, Kochi airport was reopened on Sunday noon. And now the focus of the government is on sending food and other essentials to different relief camps across the state.

A gradual improvement was observed on Sunday as the floodwaters started receding in Nilambur, Malappuram. Water levels in the major rivers such as Bharatapuzha, Pamba and Periyar have also come down.

Monsoon surge likely to become active

According to our meteorologists, the Monsoon surge is going to become active once again tomorrow, thus bringing in some enhanced rainfall activities for the state on August 13 and 14. However, this surge would be comparatively less active due to which we do not expect heavy to extremely heavy rains, but chances of moderate rains with one or two intense spells cannot be ruled out. Flooding in parts is also likely.

August 14 onwards we expect a significant drop in the rainfall activities as the Monsoon surge will weaken considerably.

Heavy downpour in the state has already taken 60 lives while displacing 227333, who have been moved to 1551 relief camps. Around 60 houses were trapped by floodwaters and in Wayanad, a 100-acre tea estate has been swept away. In Meppadi, eight people are still missing.

The worst-hit districts are Malappuram, Wayanad and Idukki, where nearly 82 landslides were reported in a span of just three days, which claimed many lives.
