Kerala Floods

The state of Kerala has been witnessing heavy rains for quite some time now. In fact, the last 24 hours saw hefty rains with Wayanad even recording a whopping 471 mm of rainfall. In fact, along with heavy showers have even resulted in landslides over the Idukki region.

At least 20 people have also reportedly lost their lives and as per the sources of the Disaster Control Room, ten have been killed due to landslides of Idukki, five were killed in Malappuram, two people have lost their lives in Kannur and one in Wayanad. Moreover, there are reports of three people missing in Palakkad, Wayanad and Kozhikode.

In Adimali of the Idukki district, two people were pulled alive from debris by locals. The Idamalayar Dam released least 600 cusecs of water, as the water level rose to a massive 169.95 m against the 169 m, which is the full reservoir level (FRL). At 8:00 am today, water level at the Idukki dam was 2,398.80 feet at 8 am, 50 feet against the FRL of 2,403 feet and was opened for the first time after 26 long years.

The decision to open dams has been attributed to the water level in the reservoir being full to the brim. The water released from the Idukki dam may cause inundation in areas of Kothamangalam, Aluva, Paravur, Kuttampuzha, Eloor, and Kalamasse.

As per weathermen, no relief is expected from the ongoing conditions as moderate to heavy showers will continue over the state of Kerala which will worsen the situation even further.
