Updated on November 30, 02:30 PM: The Deep Depression has already intensified into a cyclone and as predicted, has been named as CycloneOckhi. At present, Cyclone Okhi is over Comorin area, 60 km away from Kanyakumari and 120 km away from Thiruvananthapuram. This cyclone is moving in a west-northwest direction towards Lakshadweep Island and may further intensify into a severe Cyclonic Storm.
This will keep on battering the state with heavy to extremely heavy rains for the next 2-3 days.
Updated on November 30, 11:43 AM: Yesterday’s Depression which was over Sri Lanka intensified into a Deep Depression and lashed the state of Kerala with moderate to heavy rains during the last 24 hours. Though as predicted by Skymet Weather, these rains were mainly confined to the southern districts of the state in contrast with the stations of North Kerala.
Within the last 24 hours from 08:30 am as on Wednesday, Thiruvananthapuram recorded 23.8 mm of rains, Punalur 5 mm, while Alappuzha and Kottayam witnessed some rainy traces.

This Deep Depression which is at present over the Comorin area is likely to move in west-northwest direction towards the southeast Arabian Sea. This system is further likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by the evening of November 30. If formed it will be named as ‘Cyclone Ockhi’.

As per Skymet Weather, thus, heavy to very heavy rains are likely to batter Kerala, especially the regions of South Kerala. Stations such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kochi, and Kottayam, are expected to record torrential heavy rains.

While, the districts of North Kerala such as Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod are likely to record light to moderate showers. These rains are expected to continue to lash the state for the next 48 hours. The intensity of rains will, however, start reducing once the weather system will start traveling towards the Arabian Sea, away from Kerala coast.
Skymet Weather further warns of rough sea conditions over the south coast of Kerala and hence fishermen are advised to stay cautious and not to venture into the sea. Power failures and communication line damages are also anticipated due to squally winds that are likely to gust at a speed of 45-55 kmph.
