Kerala and Lakshadweep Brace for Continued Rain as Monsoon Approaches

May 28, 2024 2:58 PM |

Kerala and Lakshadweep residents can expect to see a continuation of moderate to heavy showers for the next few days. This pre-monsoon activity has intensified recently due to a cyclone churning in the Bay of Bengal. The cyclone's influence pulled moisture towards the Kerala coast, leading to enhanced rainfall along the western coast, particularly in Kerala and parts of coastal Karnataka.

While the cyclone has weakened, a slight decrease in rain intensity for Kerala and Lakshadweep is expected. However, moderate showers with occasional heavy spells are likely to persist for another 3-4 days. The good news for the region is that the monsoon season is right around the corner. The monsoon is forecast to arrive in Kerala on its usual date of June 1st. While the monsoon onset may not be dramatic, expect light to moderate rain with the possibility of one or two heavier downpours.

The ongoing pre-monsoon rain will gradually transition into monsoon rain by June 1st. Rainfall is also expected to pick up pace over Tamil Nadu and southern interior Karnataka. Encouragingly, initial projections suggest a satisfactory monsoon base for both the South Peninsula and Northeast India. This bodes well for the upcoming agricultural season and water security in the region.
