Two air pollution monitoring devices have been installed in Kaushambi by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB). The devices will measure PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide, and Sulphur dioxide levels in the area. Hourly reports will inform residents and authorities on existing air quality levels.
The devices were installed after residents demanded information regarding escalating air pollution levels in the area. Air quality in the area has worsened over time and locals have been suffering from respiratory problems. The Kaushambi Apartments Residents’ Welfare Association has also sent a legal notice to the concerned authorities in this regard.
Currently, the UPPCB operates three air pollution monitoring devices in the Ghaziabad district. One monitoring station is located in Vasundhara which measures PM10 and PM2.5 levels. The other two are installed in Bulandshehar and Sahibabad to record PM10 levels. The two new monitoring devices have been installed at Kamadgiri Apartment (near the bus stand) and Satpura Tower.
Air pollution continues to be a pressing issue across the country and Ghaziabad is no exception. Recently, the level of suspended air particles in Ghaziabad was found to be four times the normal. Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Air Quality Index (NAQI) which will provide information on air quality levels across 10 cities. But construction dust, vehicular emissions, and other pollutants continue to elevate toxicity levels in the air. With no concrete action plan available, monitoring devices can do little in tackling air pollution.
