Light to moderate with isolated very heavy rains occurred in Tamil Nadu after a long gap. In fact, parts of the state are likely to keep witnessing some spells for the next 24-48 hours as well.

According to Skymet Weather, the low-pressure area over Southwest Bay of Bengal is now seen as a trough of low near South Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coast. A cyclonic circulation is also embedded in the same area.

This weather system was responsible for giving rains over the state. In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am as on Tuesday, Karaikal recorded very heavy rains to the tune of 102 mm, thereby breaking a decade-old record. The city has in the last 10 years never recorded such heavy rains in the month of January.

Moreover, with this single spell, the city has also surpassed its monthly average that stands at mere 47.8 mm. The other districts of the state that witnesses light to moderate spells during the similar time frame include Parangipettai and Thanjavur that recorded 20 mm of rains each, Tiruchirapally 10 mm, Kodaikanal 9 mm, Adirampattinam 7 mm, Madurai 4 mm and Tondi recorded 3 mm of rains.

As of now also, rains varying from light to moderate intensity are expected to continue occurring over the state for the next 24-48 hours. However, with the system closer to the southern coast of the state, the intensity of rains will be more over southern parts.

Thus, for the next 24-48 hours, stations such as Madurai, Parangipettai, Karaikal, Tiruchirapalli, Kodaikanal, and Tondi may continue to get some more showers. Moreover, the peripherals of the system would affect the weather over Chennai and the city could also see light showers.
