It has been an excellent start to the Northeast Monsoon in Kerala. Since the onset on 16 October, the state has continuously been receiving good rainfall activity. There have also been instances of very heavy rainfall in Kerala which caused a flood-like situation in some areas of the state.
The last 2-3 days have also proved good for the state in terms of Northeast Monsoon rain. For instance, in the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Friday Kannur has received a whopping 108 mm of rain. Kozhikode and Karipur airport received 60 mm and 38 mm of rain. Light rain of 12 mm and 9 mm was also observed in Alapphuza and Punalur, respectively.
North Kerala was the region that was majorly being affected by heavy rains in the last 3 days due to the effect of the very severe cyclone Kyarr. But the intensity of rain is now going to subside in the region tomorrow onward.
According to the weather models, the rainfall activity is now going to shift to the southern region of the state from 27 October. A Cyclonic Circulation over the Southwest Bay of Bengal will travel towards Sri Lanka, South Tamil Nadu and south Kerala in the next 24- 48 hours intensifying the rainfall activity in South Kerala. The northern districts of Kerala will observe subdued rainfall activity during this period.
Kerala during the Northeast Monsoon so far has received 379.8 mm of rain which is 52% more than the October average of 250.2 mm.
