Heat Wave in Gujarat

Updated on 1643 hours: With drop in maximums, heat wave abates from most parts of Gujarat

As expected the winds have changed their course well before time. The westerlies from the Arabian Sea have helped in abating heat wave conditions from many parts of Gujarat. Surat for that matter has been the beneficiary and has witnessed a drop of six degrees and at present is settled around 36.2°C. Similarly, Porbandar also witnessed a drop of four degrees in the day temperature. The experts have to say that such relief will be a sight for the coming two to three days, at least.

Updated on 1526 hours: Kandla, Surat and Porbandar witnessing heat wave conditions

Severe heat wave conditions are being witnessed in parts of Gujarat. The coastal stations in particular like Kandla, Surat and Porbandar are under heat wave conditions with day temperature settling 7-9 degrees above normal. The temperatures over these stations are somewhere around 43°C, which should ideally settle in the  mid 30s. The other coastal stations like Veraval and Dwarka are witnessing maximums above normal by a couple of degrees. The reason for heat wave can be attributed to a prolonged dry spell. Gujarat has not received any rain during the spring period (February 18- April 20).

Whenever there is a prolonged dry spell, temperatures tend to rise. Another factor that has contributed to heat wave in Gujarat is the continuous flow of dry and hot winds from the northwest direction. Pre-Monsoon activities usually keep the temperatures under check as intermittent rain and thundershowers help in bringing down the temperature to normal category.

According to meteorologists, the heat wave condition is expected to continue in the region for at least next two to three days. Thereafter, the wind direction might change from north-westerlies to westerlies and would help in bringing down the temperatures by two to three degrees as these winds would be blowing from the Arabian Sea. However, the maximum will still hover around 40 degrees.

The vulnerable section of the society like children and elderly, with chronic diseases should take special precaution.
