June is the transition month from pre-Monsoon to Monsoon for nearly the entire country. Commencing from the southern part of India, Monsoon gradually covers the Central, East and finally North India by the end of June.
Here’s a look at the transition period in different parts of India:
Peninsular India
The first pocket to shed the pre-Monsoon heat is Peninsular India. Telangana, Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka, interiors of Tamil Nadu and even Kerala have witnessed severe heatwave in April and May. This part of the country will slip into pleasant days now.
Northeast India
Southwest Monsoon enters Northeast India simultaneously with Kerala and the West Coast. This time around we can expect Monsoon current to reach here by the first ten days of June. A clear transition is not seen as pre-Monsoon rains as such are quite heavy in this region. There is not much change in temperatures as well. Most of the activity takes place during late evening till early morning hours.
Northeast do not see much change as May is also a rainy month for Northeast and this region quietly slips into the Monsoon season. The changeover is not very prominent here.
Central & East India
Unlike Northeast, the changeover is not seamless here. The hottest pockets of Vidarbha, Marathwada and Odisha start receiving Monsoon rain from the middle of June. Mostly pleasant weather conditions are witnessed and heatwave remains completely absent. Southwest Monsoon enters East India almost simultaneously with the central parts.
North India
The heat still takes time to leave North India. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas do experience high temperatures even when Monsoon enters the country. However, the smell of Monsoon remains in the air, bringing some relief. It’s the impending Monsoon current that brings some joy among the people here. Monsoon finally enters by the fag end of the month.
Rajasthan is the only part of the country to wait for Monsoon till middle of July.
June as such witnesses large variability in rainfall. The pan-India normal rainfall in the month is 163.5 mm. A glimpse at the last 4 year rainfall suggests that 2015 received ways above the normal rainfall to the tune of 189.5 mm, 2014 received just 95.2 mm, 2013 far exceeded the normal and recorded 219.8 mm and 2012 received 117.8 mm.
