June to end on deficit note for Kerala despite increase in Monsoon rains

June 23, 2017 11:42 AM |

Rain in KeralaMonsoon rains in Kerala have finally gained momentum, with the coastal state recording moderate showers with isolated heavy rains. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Kochi recorded 47 mm of rain, followed by Thrissur 37.8 mm, Malappuram 38.5 mm, Kottayam 32.8 mm, Konni 25 mm, Kozhikode 20 mm, Alappuzha 16 mm, Kollam 13 mm, and Punalur 10 mm.

Kerala is known for pouring rains during June but contrary to this, Monsoon rains have remained far and few till now. Most parts of the state have been recording light rains with handful moderate spells. With this, Kerala is battling rain deficiency to the tune 32% as on June 22.

According to Skymet Weather, though initial Monsoon surge was good but only light rains were recorded over the state thereafter. However, weather conditions have now become favourable for rains to pick up pace during the leftover days of June.

Increase in the rain activity can be attributed to the off-shore trough getting active once again. The trough is now extending all along the West Coast from South Gujarat to Kerala. It had earlier become insignificant and was running along Karnataka and North Kerala coast only.

A cyclonic circulation is also likely to form over South Gujarat and adjoining North Arabian Sea during the next 48 hours, which will further aid the rainfall. However, weathermen predict that intensity of rains will be more over northern parts of West Coastal.

Though some heavy rains are anticipated but Kerala will continue to lag as the normal rainfall figures for the state are very high. Hence, June is most likely to end with the below normal rainfall.

“Monsoon will remain active giving good rains over Kerala for the next 48 hours but the intensity will not be as much as over Konkan & Goa and Coastal Karnataka. Thus, we do not expect any significant improvement in rainfall deficiency,” said Mahesh Palawat, Chief Meteorologist, Skymet Weather.
