Southwest Monsoon generally arrives over Uttar Pradesh by June 15 and covers the entire state in a week or so. But this year, progress of the eastern arm of Monsoon was rather slow and somewhat stagnant for about two weeks.

The first surge of Monsoon over Uttar Pradesh was not witnessed before June 23, a delay of over a week. Even then, Monsoon was just about touching East UP. Thereafter, Monsoon covered the entire state in the next 24 hours. Right from the beginning, Uttar Pradesh received scanty rainfall right up to the third week.

By June 15, both eastern and western UP recorded extremely deficient rainfall. While rainfall in East UP was deficient by 72%, West UP recorded a deficiency of 60%.

Although conditions did improve after the advancement of Monsoon, but even then, rainfall in both parts of the state remained deficient. By June 25, East UP recorded a deficiency of 59%, whereas West UP showed signs of a good recovery recording a rainfall deficiency of 15%. Following few days have resulted in fairly good rains including a few heavy showers over some places.

As of June 29, substantial improvement has been observed in Uttar Pradesh in terms of total rainfall recorded. East UP holds a deficiency of just 22% and West UP has reached the mark of normal rainfall. In the last 24 hours, the state has observed good rainfall activity with heavy rain at some places. Gorakhpur in East UP recorded 17 mm rainfall, Lucknow in Central UP received 56 mm of rain, and Bareilly in West UP observed 118 mm rainfall activity in the last 24 hours. This exceptionally good rainfall spread is likely to take the state to normal and/or above normal rainfall mark in June.
