In the month of July, Chennai has received good rain only on two occasions, 18 mm on July 6 and 36 mm on July 17. After that the weather conditions have been extremely fickle over the city. Very light patchy rain continued over Chennai. But since last 4-5 days, the weather remained very dry and it only rained in patches at one or two places.
Monthly average for Chennai is 100.3 mm and till now the monthly actual rain over the city has been 77.2 mm.
But by the looks of it, things are about to change as a feeble trough is extending from central parts of the country to interior Tamil Nadu. This will give some scattered light to moderate rain over many areas of the state for next 2-3 days.
The trough which is in the interior parts of the state will give good rain over these areas and thereafter it will move to coastal areas. It is expected that there will be an increase in rain intensity over coastal areas which includes Chennai.
As for today, there may be light rain in patches but rain intensity will definitely increase around July 29 to 31. Till date, Tamil Nadu has received 24% excess rainfall.
