Showers in Kerala

June is the least rainy month during Monsoon season. However, this year, June ended at 5% rainfall deficient note which is considered to be normal. This season, East and Northeast India have been the worst performing regions, with South India performing the best.

July is the core Monsoon month during Southwest Monsoon for most locations of the country. Heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy rains are seen in most parts with the heaviest falls along the West Coast and Northeast India. This is due to the topography of these areas.

The Pan India rains for the month of July stands at about 289 mm which is 33% of the total Monsoon rains during the entire season. Though the month kickstarted on a deficit note, the first ten days being poor. This took the country’s overall deficiency to 9% from 5% in June.

Halfway through the month, we saw active to vigorous Monsoon conditions covering large areas. It was during that time that the country observed approximately 40% excess rains on a daily basis for a few days.

Thereafter, between July 21 and 23, the Pan India rainfall deficiency reduced to 2% which is considered to be normal. Heavy Monsoon rains covered most parts of the country including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat and then the fury occurred over Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, sparing Northeast India.

In the last few days, heavy to very heavy rains occurred over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and the neighboring regions.

During the last week, the rains reduced again over most parts, though, it occurred over the most deficit pockets of the country, namely Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The rains remained limited to these two pockets only, leading to the deficiency popping to 6%.

Thus, the month of July is ending on a slightly deficit note, the month of August is also expected to follow similar footprints as it may also start on a weaker note.
