Kerala is one of the rainiest pockets of the country during the Southwest Monsoon season. The state also has a 450 km long continuous mountain range on its eastern side. In the four-month long season, June is the rainiest month for the state and for all the stations as well. This feature enhances the orographic rainfall over the state that increases from South to North.
However, the southernmost tip of the coastal state, Thiruvananthapuram, is the least rainy pocket of the entire state. The reason for this is the location of the station with respect to the orientation of the mountain range. Thiruvananthapuram is situated at the southernmost tip and enjoys its proximity to sea both to its west and south.
The mountains do not act as a direct barrier to the winds blowing from the Arabian Sea, the southernmost station does not receive many rains during the season. In fact, the monthly normal rains for the city also keep on reducing from June, coming forward to the other three months.

The normal rainfall that the city record in the month of June stands at 300 mm which reduces to 189 mm in July and further tapers down to 136 in the month of August. However, September end prepares the state to usher in the Northeast Monsoon and for the withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon which in turn, revives rain over the state.
However, this season, the city has been able to exceed its monthly mean of July by recording a total of 250 mm of rains against 189 mm.
In addition to this, August also began on a rainy note. The city observed 66 mm of heavy rains in the last 24 hours. By this, the city has already recorded a major chunk of its monthly total. Moreover, for the next 3-4 days also, conditions are conducive for some more moderate rains to continue over the region.
Usually, rains occur over Thiruvananthapuram by the virtue of the offshore trough or by the virtue of Monsoon surge with the help of mountains. The weather would remain pleasant with persistent clouding. The maximum temperatures would remain in the lower 30’s and minimums would prevail in the lower 20’s.
