July 23 to July 29 is the rainiest week of the season so farJuly is one of the rainiest months in the Monsoon season. After the first half of July, Monsoon is usually at its peak. During this period, the daily normal rainfall is the highest and at times it amounts to around 10 mm per day.

During this Monsoon season, the first half of July performed poorly in terms of rainfall. Rainfall remained below normal for the entire period. However, the week from July 23 to July 29 observed heavy to very heavy rain making it the rainiest week of the season so far.

During this week, rainfall remained well above normal for all the days in the week. The country observed 82 mm of rain against the average rainfall of 67.8 mm. About 21 per cent of excess rain was recorded during the week.

Earlier, the countrywide deficiency was mounting and had reached up to around 8 per cent. However, with this rainy spell the deficiency has dropped down to 3 per cent. Also the deficiency for the month of July which stood at 26 per cent also dropped to about 15 per cent by the end of this week.

These Monsoon rains over the week occurred due to the depression over Rajasthan region. The main contributors for the drop in the deficiency in the countrywide rainfall were Rajasthan, Gujarat and West Madhya Pradesh region.

The aforementioned areas recorded nearly five to ten times more rain against their daily average. This heavy spell of rain had resulted in floods or flood like situation in most parts of these regions. However, now the depression has weakened and the rainfall figures are back to the normal levels.

August is expected to begin on a rainy note. The national capital will also receive good rains on the first day of August itself. Also, most parts of India will observe fairly good rains for the first ten days of the coming month.
