The month of August so far has been very good for Jodhpur in terms of rainfall activities. The city has received a whopping 235 mm of rain in August so far against the monthly average of 111.5 mm rain, which is more than twice the normal rainfall for the month.
In a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Wednesday, heavy rain to the tune of 64 mm has lashed the city. A similar condition was observed on August 17, wherein heavy showers of 88 mm had been recorded.
Because of good amounts of rainfall, Jodhpur from June 1 to August 28 is observing a rainfall surplus by 36%. And with more showers coming up for the city, this surplus is likely to get better.
Meteorologists at Skymet have predicted light rains for the city during the next 48 hours. Thereafter, the intensity will increase and moderate showers would return to the state by the first week of September, wherein the initial four days would observe good amounts of rain.
Jodhpur is one of the least rainiest cities of Rajasthan. It is only the Monsoon season that brings in some significant rains for the state. Pre- Monsoon season also remains dominated by dust storm and there is hardly any rain. Thus, once the Monsoon makes an exit, the city has no other option but to wait for the next season to experience rain and thundershowers.
The monthly average rainfall for June, July, and August are 40 mm, 120.5 mm and 111.5 mm respectively. September is the withdrawal month with a meagre average of 50 mm.
However, this season has been different. The withdrawal month is near and the Monsoon rains are still intact. Looking at the scenario, it seems like the city may not see an early withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon this time.
