The Western Disturbance affecting North India continues to give snow and rain over the hilly states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. While snowfall was confined to higher reaches of the hilly states, widespread light to moderate rain was witnessed in the middle and lower reaches.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the system has moved north-eastwards towards Western Himalayas and has now cleared away from the region. However, the hilly states will continue to witness light to moderate rain for next few days as well on account of another approaching Western Disturbance.
The fresh system is presently lying over North Pakistan and adjoining areas and has already caused clouding up in the hills.
In the span of last 24 hours, Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir recorded 2.5 mm of rain, Pahalgam 20.4 mm, Banihal 17.4 mm, Batote 12.8 mm, Srinagar 13.8 mm and Gulmarg 13 mm.
In Himachal Pradesh, Kullu received 29.3 mm of rain, Manali 25.6 mm, Kalpa 12.6 mm, Chamba 11.2 mm, Keylong 11 mm and Shimla 2.8 mm. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand recorded light rainfall with Uttarkashi observing 6 mm of rain and Joshimath 3 mm.
In the wake of the system, minimum temperatures have increased by two to three degrees, while the maximum temperatures have dropped significantly across the region, especially in Jammu and Kashmir where day temperatures which had been settling above normal by 7 to 8 degrees are now recording below normal.
On Monday, Srinagar recorded maximum temperature of 6.9°C, which was two degrees below normal, Kupwara 3.5°C, five degrees below normal, Batote 7.8°C, again three degrees below normal and Pahalgam 4.9°C, one degree below normal.
The system has also affected weather over plains, especially northern parts of Punjab and Haryana. Isolated parts of these states have also observed light rainfall in the span of last 24 hours. Amritsar in Punjab recorded 20 mm of rain, Ludhiana 1.1 mm and Chandigarh 0.2 mm.
Hilly states of northern India will be experiencing extended period of snow and rain this week.
Western Disturbances during the winter season affect the weather to quite a large extent. The areas affected by this system usually receive short spell of rain for a day or two. Due to its movement from east to west, it is called Western Disturbance.
