Chennai rains

Although Northeast Monsoon has officially come to an end over Tamil Nadu on December 31, rains still continue to batter Chennai.

Chennai on an average receives 25.9 mm rains in January. The month is almost a dry period for the city. Temperatures start soaring in the absence of rains and pleasant weather makes its way with minimums in the mid-20s and maximums in high 20s. Rains do not play a spoilsport in the month anymore.

However, this time, January began on a wet note for the city. In fact, the first two days in January have already recorded more than average rains and surpassed the monthly normal. While Nungambakkam received 18 mm of rains, Minambakkam received 28 mm of rain on January 1. On Jan 2, Nungambakkam received 26 mm of rains, Minambakkam received 33 mm of rain.

Looking at the forecast, similar weather is being forecast for the next 3 to 4 days with a probability of light rains. A few places might even receive moderate rains. These rains will be mainly seen during the later part of the day, especially in the night hours.  A cloudy sky will continue to prevail in the early hours of the day.

Talking about the cumulative rain performance of Tamil Nadu this Northeast Monsoon season, the state of Tamil Nadu has performed within the normal range. However, Chennai remained a little short of the target by roughly 10%.

The rain normal for Tamil Nadu reduces drastically in January as compared to 3-digit rain normal in the trio post-Monsoon months of October, November and December.
