2018 began on a dry note across the country. In fact, most parts of the states in the country remained absolutely dry.

This time of the year is apt for the commencement of winter rains in the Northern Plains and cessation of Northeast Monsoon over the Southern Peninsular region.

However, this year has been a different story altogether, with rains remaining far and few over a larger area. So, let us have a look at the weather conditions across the regions of the country.

Northwest India

Practically, the region has witnessed only one spell of winter rains this season and to be precise, last 11 days of January has been completely dry. States like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand were 100% rain deficient. Though Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh recorded some rains, that made no major difference as the deficit remained at 99% and 98%, respectively.

East and Northeast India

West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar in East India recorded no rain during this month, so far. This can be attributed to the absence of any weather system over or around the region.

However, Northeast India performed better in terms of rains. States like Mizoram and Nagaland recorded rains in excess of 200% of their average rainfall.

Central India

During this time of the year, the central parts of the country remain dry as no significant weather system affects the region. According to weathermen, Central India remains unaffected from Western Disturbances in the north or any other system over Peninsular India during this time. Thus, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Goa, like the usual times, witnessed dry weather.

South India

Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands as well as Lakshadweep Islands outperformed other subdivisions of South India with excess rainfall. Meanwhile, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka recorded no rainfall at all. On the other hand, sporadic showers did lash the state of Tamil Nadu on some occasions.

Barring Telangana and Karnataka, rest of the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep Islands recorded rains of varying intensity.

Overall, the country recorded a rainfall of 1 mm against the normal of 5.3 mm thereby leaving a deficiency of 81%.

Further, in the absence of any marked weather system, we do not expect any significant rains anytime soon.
