jammu highway closed due to heavy rainsHeavy rains in Jammu Kashmir due to a fresh Western Disturbance have thrown life out of gear in the region. The 300 km long Jammu-Srinagar highway was closed last night after heavy rains resulted in landslides in the Udhampur district.  The Amarnath yatra has also been halted due to inclement weather conditions in the region.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Katra has received a good 74 mm of rain. The conditions are most likely to improve after 24 hours. However, rainfall will continue over the hills of North India for the next 48 hours or so. But, the rainfall activity will largely be confined to Himachal Pradesh, while Jammu and Kashmir will receive very less showers.

The Amarnath Yatra was stopped from the Jammu base camp by the authorities. On both sides of the highway, some vehicles have been stranded due to weather extremities in the region.

The Border Roads Organisation have sent machines and men to help out in clearing the landslide. The Jammu-Srinagar highway may reopen this evening if more rainfall activity does not occur in the region. Also, the Amarnath Yatra will be resumed as soon as the conditions improve in the area.
