Jammu-Srinagar highway closed; avalanche alert for Kashmir, HimachalAfter witnessing clear weather conditions for quite some time, rain and snow have once again made a comeback over the hills of North India. Jammu and Kashmir in particular has witnessed heavy to very heavy rains and snow during the last 24 hours.

These weather conditions have been attributed to the presence of an active Western Disturbance. The fresh weather system is currently situated over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. During the last 24 hours, Srinagar witnessed record rains of 62 mm.

As per media reports, the Jammu-Srinagar highway has been closed once again after being opened for a short while on Friday. Due to heavy rain, which was followed by a landslide, the highway has been closed. Operations for clearance of roads are underway.

Keeping in view the weather conditions, avalanche alert of medium danger has been issued in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir including Kargil, Doda, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Anantnag and adjoining areas.

Not only this, avalanche alert has also been issued for many areas in Himachal Pradesh including Shimla, Kinnaur, Chamba, Mandi, Sirmaur along with Lahaul-Spiti.

During the next 24 hours, rain and snow is likely to continue over the hills. Residents are advised to exercise caution.
