Jammu and Kashmir receives more rain in winter than monsoon

March 28, 2014 3:40 PM |

Nestled in the Himalayan, Pir Panjal and Karakoram mountain ranges, Jammu and Kashmir, commonly referred as Kashmir is the northern most state of India.

Jammu and Kashmir shares an international border with Afghanistan on the north, and China on the east.  Some bordering areas of Jammu and Kashmir have been a centre of conflict since India's Independence. It definitely took a toll on the lives of people in Kashmir and affected the fragile environment but has failed to snatch the charm of this beautiful place. Meandering water bodies, picturesque valleys connected by high mountain passes and snow clad mountains forms this state.

Weather in Jammu and Kashmir

Weather in Jammu and Kashmir varies greatly due to its topography. The state has three main divisions- Jammu, the Kashmir valley and Ladakh. The land of numerous shrines, Jammu is the winter capital while Srinagar is the summer capital. Let’s find out the weather conditions in the two capitals in the coming days.

Srinagar

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Srinagar received 12.7 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. The maximum recorded yesterday was 13.9°C, while the minimum today morning was 5.8°C. The average maximum and minimum for the month are 13.9°C and 3.6°C respectively. The temperature will rise significantly in April with mean averages of 20.4°C and 7.7°C as maximum and minimum, respectively.

Skymet Meteorology Division in India had mentioned earlier as well that Srinagar receives more rain in the month of March than in the monsoon season. The average rainfall for the month of March is 115.6 mm while the average is 60 mm and 70 mm in July and August, respectively. We can say that March is the rainiest month for Srinagar.

Jammu

Jammu is definitely hotter with maximum and minimum at 26.7°C and 17.2°C, respectively. The average day and night temperatures for the month of March are 25.9°C and 13.9°C. Here as well, temperature rises in April with average maximum and minimum of 32°C and 18.9°C, respectively.

It is normal for the state to receive rain in April and the present Western Disturbance will continue to bring some rain for the next 48 hours. Jammu and Kashmir receives heavy rain and snow in the winter months under the influence of frequent Western Disturbances but monsoon here arrives late around the first week of July.

Skymet Meteorology Division in India explains that the monsoon current generally remains weak over Jammu and Kashmir. It picks up strength only during the passage of westerly systems moving across the extreme northern parts. Therefore, monsoon rain here is less than the winter rain.
